Today I am going to share an iPhone app with you that I have found to be extremely useful in finding pop/rock audition songs for musical theatre performers. Often a student will come in with a show based on music by a specific artist, for instance Elvis, and they are at a loss for what to sing for the audition. Discovr helps you and your students find similar artists via an easy to use interface. Type in the name of an artist, for example “Elvis” and you will get a list to choose from.
Click on the artist and you will be taken to a screen that shows you a photo of the artist you searched for. Tap the photo of the artist and a bubble chart will pop-up showing you similar artists.
Click on any of the artists and the bubbles will expand with artists similar to the one you have just clicked on.
When you find someone you are interested in, press and hold your finger on that artist’s icon and a pop-up menu will give you several listening options.
Select one and a headphones icon will appear on the center top of the screen. Touch that and an interface will appear that allows you to listen to thirty second cuts of each song.
The app is easy to use and at $2.99, it is well worth the investment. To check it out on the app store, click here. If you know of other apps that are similar, especially for Android, please share below in the comment section. Thanks for reading!

Spotify has a “similar artists” list on each artist’s page. I use it a lot to find music. Also on each artist’s page is their top tracks. If you shuffle play an artist, it generally includes their top tracks first. If you play a radio station based on the artist’s page, you get similar artists.
I really like this visual web on Discovr. Keeps all of the artists you’re looking at in one view, which you can’t do on Spotify.
